Complete Characterization of Degradation Byproducts of Olmesartan Acid, Degradation Pathway, and Ecotoxicity Assessment

Antihypertensive drugs are among the most prescribed drugs. Olmesartan acid, of sartan class, belongs to a relatively new generation antihypertensive called angiotensin II receptor blockers. There very few studies on presence and fate sartans in environment, despite them being marketed huge quantities, metabolized low percentages, detected wastewater water bodies. This paper presents study less abundant more polar fractions that have been neglected previous studies, which led isolation by chromatographic methods thirteen degradation byproducts (DPs), six new, identified nuclear magnetic resonance mass spectrometry. A mechanism from parent drug was proposed. The ecotoxicity olmesartan acid compounds evaluated Aliivibrio fischeri bacteria Raphidocelis subcapitata algae assess acute chronic toxicity. For 75% DPs, exposure compounds, at concentrations 5 mg/L, inhibited population growth decreased bioluminescence bacteria.
